Success Story: Many times, young persons who are driven to acts of violence have themselves grown up with violence in their homes and/or have been physically, sexually, and/or emotionally abused. This type of life circumstance can perpetuate acts of violence toward other persons and/or family members. In 1999, a unique collaboration between the Western Illinois Regional Council-Community Action Agency's Victim Services, the Macomb Police Department, the Teen Court Program, and the Juvenile Probation Office was initaited to address the issue of teen violence. The pilot program, LIFT, was developed with grant funding received from the Illinois Violence Prevention Authority in January 1999. There are two groups, which run concurrently, and on an ongoing basis: one for teen females, and one for teen males. Referrals come from the collaborators. The primary emphasis is on developing positive, non-violent behaviors through learning respect for others, conflict resolution, self-respect, and other self-esteem issues. In the year 1999, fifteen teens successfully completed the LIFT program. Comments and subsequent actions of the participants appear to be positive. Realizing that this program is not the ultimate solution, it is certainly a tool for effective dialogue, which may change a teen's course towards violent behavior.
