Velvet was working but barely making ends meet, and she and her three children, Jessica, Joshua, and Jamel were struggling. Velvet was very quiet and shy. She attended Family Development Program meetings but did not say alot. Sometimes it was hard to know how she was doing and what she needed. One day, Velvet stopped in our office to let us know she had obtained employment in housekeeping at Memorial Hospital. She was very excited about this and more talkative than usual. Our agency FCD Program bought the required uniforms for her to start her new job and waited anxiously to see how things would work out for her. We began to see changes in Velvet. She still attended meetings regularly. Velvet opened up more and participated greatly in group discussions and in parenting and budgeting classes. She soon found a residence in a new neighborhood with rent she could afford that was close to school, the grocery store, laundromat, and a friend that would help watch the children. Being in Memorial Hospital made Velvet aware of the programs available to employees including the CNA paid training class. Velvet applied and has now started that program. After completion of the program, Velvet hopes to continue in another program offered that will give her additional skills and pay even more money. Velvet is doing well. She is energetic and we have found she has a wonderful personality which will make her work in the medical field with patients easier for her. We have assisted Velvet with rent, utilities, and car repair to help her achieve her goals of becoming self-sufficient. To put it in her own words, "I am moving up. If my friends want to stay behind that is their decision." Programs: Community Development Assistance Program; Revolving Loan Fund; Community Services Block Grant; Illinois Home Weatherization Assistance Program; Job Training Partnership Act; Adult Programs; Dislocated Workers; Summer Youth; Youth Programs; Older Worker; Low Income Home Assistance Program. |
