Chicago Ave. Freeport, IL 61032 Executive Director: Marcia Derrer Telephone: 815-232-3141 Fax: 815-232-3143 Website: no website available People Served: 3000 No. of Employees: 110 No. of Volunteers: 200 Service Area: Carroll, JoDaviess, Stephenson, Whiteside Success Story: A man and woman were referred to the Northwestern Illinois Community Action Agency because they were homeless and jobless. The woman had two children that live with other family members, and due to her circumstances she rarely got to see them. They were also struggling to buy food when they came in so we gave them food referral. That was when they heard about our Supportive Housing Program and applied for that. They moved into NICAA's housing unit about a month later (October 2000). Once they moved into the unit, they used the LIHEAP program to get the utilities turned on in their name. The couple wanted to attend school in the fall, but knew they could not afford it. By January 2001, they had applied for and approved for a scholarship through the CSBG program. They were able to turn down our agency's assistance when they were both approved for better financial aid. In May 2001, they will complete their first semester of college. He will complete a certificate in Food Sanitation by that date and will be working on another certificate in Welding. She is working on an Associate's of Science degree in social services. Along with school, both are working, and have been able to maintain their employment. Due to the new housing and employment, the couple has reestablished a good relationship with their children, and they are starting the proceedings to get the children back permanently. Although it is hard for them, they are working very hard to save money so they can finally be self-sufficient. Programs: Weatherization; Head Start; Day Care; Golden Meals; Single Family Owner Rehab; Rental Rehab; CSBG; Emergency Services; FEMA; Kid Care; Low Income Energy Assistance; Medical Transportation; IDPH Lead Programs; and Supportive Housing. |
