Success Story: This letter domonstrates the effectiveness of the Kendall Grundy Commnity Action. We recieved a phone call from the daughter of an 80-year-old couple that live in a rather remote area of our county. The daughter explained to us that she was unable to help her mother and father, and was worried about their furnace not working through the winter. We phoned the parents and contracted a heating company out to check on their system. They notified us that the system was outdated and in such poor condition that to repair it would not be cost efficient. In just one day, the furnace was replaced and the couple was warm for the winter. They also noted the poor condition of the electrical system running throughout the house. A Whole House Energy Audit was administered to determine any remaining deficiencies. The electrical wiring was exposed in the breaker box and on the outside of the house. It was not up to code and needed to be replaced due to the safety hazard it was posing. The water heater w as in the same shape as the furnace and therefore was replaced. An old rusted gas line and meter were replaced due to the possibility of a leak. A section of the roof was deteriorated and leaking, creating a health hazard. We had our contractor remove and replace the bad roofing which stopped the leak. The stove was replaced with the help of another community effort in which a private citizen offered to provide his truck and labor to see that the stove need was fulfilled. Due to health problems, both seniors need supplemental oxygen. Our Senior Services Program staff was brought in, and they now have a caseworker to make a friendly visit with them and check on their safety. The children of the couple were thrilled to hear that there was someone to hear that there was someone to take the necessary steps to ensure the safety and comfort of their parents.
