Karen was referred to and became a recipient of both the commodity and weatherization programs. Because Karen's husband battled alcoholism and was often umemployed, she decided that she wanted more security in her life and chose to pursue a career in nursing through ERBA's Employment and Training Program. Even with the everyday household problems that low income families face, her spouse's continued struggle with alcohol, and her diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, Karen maintained top grades. Karen says that the encouragement that she received from the Jasper County ERBA staff was a great strength in achieving her goal at age 44. After receiving her degree, Karen was employed at St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham, Illinois for two years. She then spent 6 years workig through Lincolnland Visiting Nurses, and has been employed as Director of Nurses at Cumberland Nursing Center in Greenup, Illinois for the past 5 years. Karen says that if it had not been for the financial programs available through ERBA, she would not have had the opportunity to achieve her goals. Karne lost her husband to cancer in November 2000. this makes her even more grateful for the opportunity to pursue her options when she made the decision to go back to school. She asks, "Where would I be today if I had not made that decision?"
