A story that comes to mind is the family of three that were empty-handedly awaiting the arrival of Christmas 2001. They basically had nothing. The husband suffered from severe diabetes and had been doing a few little odd jobs, until he broke his wrist. They lived in sub-par housing, had no car, heated with wood, and even did their laundry on an old wringer washing machine and then hung their clothes out to dry, in the middle of winter. Our first encounter with them was through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program; but we did more to help them enjoy the Christmas holiday. We provided food, clothing and Christmas gifts, not only for the daughter; but for Mom and Dad, too! Programs: Affordable Housing; Clothing Room; Community Services Block Grant; CSBG Loans; CSBG Scholarships; Crisis Intervention; Emergency Food and Shelter; Emergency Home Repair; Emergency Services; Family and Community Development; Food Pantry; Health and Immunizations; Homeless Prevention Services; Housing Rehabilitation; Illinois Home Weatherization Assistance Program; Jobs Expansion; KidCare; Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program; Meals for Seniors; Outreach and Referrals; Surplus Food Commodities Distribution; Transportation for Senior and Low Income People; Tutorial Program; Youth Recreation. |
