Success Story:Jane immigrated to the United States in 1996 from India. She married Bill and had two children. During their marriage, Bill had lied, cheated and abused Jane. He would threaten, physically hurt, and emotionally abuse her. Finally, Jane contacted a local, community-based organization in Chicago that assists victims of domestic violence. The organization provided a number of services and supports to help Jane improve her situation. They provided case management, counseling and a supportive environment in which Jane felt strong enough to file divorce. Additionally, with the help of the organization, Jane received basic computer training and enrolled in a community college. She currently has an entry-level job. While Jane has made significant strides, she is still receiving services from the community-based organization to help her fully regain her independence.
