Success Story:"I am an eighteen year old black man and already, I have endured more hardship than most people twice my age. I was raised in a single-parent, low-income household with a mother who abused drugs during most of my childhood. Statistics say I should be a complete failure and menace to society. However, I can proudly say I have managed to defy the odds. I hold several positions in school and community organizations. Also, I am the recipient of this year's Son of the American Revolution Award, the Illinois Lieutenant Governor's Youth Excellence Award, Prinicipal's Scholar, and Student of the week, just to name a few. Since the age of fourteen I have been working at the Carver Community Action Agency. I have worked in our Summer Food and Recreation Program as a group leader for the last four years and as a program assistant. Because I come from a low-income family, I have worked two jobs since my freshman year. A few of the places I have been employed are Target, the Galesburg Public Library, and the law firm of Barash and Stoerzbach, all while working at Carver Community Action Agency, and maintaining a 3.5 grade point average. I've been accepted to Marquette University, and DePaul Unversity, which I will be attending this fall. Firmly, I believe that the assistance and guidance Carver Community Action Agency has given me has made me the successful person I am today."
